Nicholas is one of six children from an extremely poor family living on the tea estate at Kericho.
Nicholas passed out top from Saramek Primary and initially went to a boarding school 20 miles from Kericho but had a lot of hearing problems and so finished at Marinyn day school nearer home. The Trust has paid for hearing tests and specialist hospital visits to Nairobi but he has decided not to have an operation for fear of losing his hearing completely. His marks have not been as high as we had hoped, but he is still hoping to get some sponsorship to go to college.
Will and Shirley visited him and his family in July 2014 and realised the huge hurdles he was facing – not least an 11km walk to and then from school and when home unable to afford the kerosene in their lamp to read and do his homework.
The Saramek Trust was able to help with these challenges. He was a school prefect and the Assistant Head spoke highly of his character and said how well he had coped with his hearing disability. After meeting up with him in May 2016 Will and Shirley agreed to pay for a computer course in Kericho. Will met up with him there in June 2019. He has been doing temporary work but still hopes to raise funds to go to a technical college to qualify to become a teacher. It also sadly seems he is still having problems with his ears.
